Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Recommendation StatementDartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756; Mark.Fillinger{at}Hitchcock.org The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has updated the 1996 recommendations for screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and the supporting scientific evidence. A Grade B recommendation, which means the UPSTF recommends clinicians provide the service to eligible patients, is made that men age 65 to 75 who have ever smoked have a one-time screening by ultrasonography. A Grade C recommendation (no recommendation for or against routine screening) has been made for men in this age group who have never smoked. Because women have low prevalence of AAA-related death, the USPSTF recommends against routine screening for AAA for asymptomatic patients (Grade D).
