Novel Uses of Fibrin Glue in Vascular Surgery
Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL The field of tissue adhesives has recently developed a number of novel clinical applications especially relevant to the surgical specialties. Fibrin glue has been commonly used as a hemostatic agent. In this article, we discuss the most common use of fibrin glue as an adjunct to control hemorrhage, as well as its use as a means to deliver biologic substances to a target. We then will describe some novel applications of fibrin glue in various specialties. Future applications of biologic tissue adhesives will depend on our ability to develop a product that will provide all the benefits discussed without incurring the potential risk of viral transmission.
